RA Power Solutions was approached by a world-leading steel manufacturing company regarding repeated problems faced by them in Peroni Pompe Italy’s crankshaft and bearings. Due to the frequent breakdowns of the Peroni plant, the company experienced heavy financial losses and production downtime. RA Power Solutions deployed two senior engineers to the steel plant to inspect and audit the Peroni Pompe Italy.
The following are the main observations after the inspection of Peroni Pompe Italy:
- As mentioned above, the maintenance staff reported frequent failures of bearings and the crankshaft of the Peroni Pompe in Italy.
- The Pompe was disassembled, and the crankshaft was removed from the blocks.
- The dimensional inspection of three number crankpins was conducted, revealing excessive ovality ranging from 0.07 mm to 0.10mm, which is considered to be on the high side.
- Deep bearing line marks and scoring marks were observed on the rough surface of the crankpin diameter.
- On examination of the crankpin bearing, they also found deep linear marks, and in some areas, the tri-metal coating was removed.
As a standard procedure, hardness and MPI tests were conducted to check for cracks in the Peroni Pompe crankpins. Both parameters were observed to be within specified limits.
Actions taken for the repair of a Peroni Pompe Italy crankshaft:
- The grinding of the crankpin, which had a standard diameter of 215 mm, was undertaken due to deep scoring marks on the crankpins. RA Power Solutions’ technicians had to undersize the crankpin diameter by 1.50 mm.
- After grinding the radius fillet on both sides of the crankpin, it was polished. Below is a table showing the dimensions of the crankpin before and after the grinding job was executed.
SIZE OF CR JOURNAL | |||||||||
A | Aa | C | Cc | B | Bb | Min | Max | Ovality | |
CR-1 Before | 214.78 | 214.73 | 214.81 | 214.81 | 214.76 | 214.77 | 214.73 | 214.81 | 0.08 mm |
CR-1 After | 213.49 | 213.48 | 213.49 | 213.50 | 213.49 | 213.48 | 213.48 | 213.50 | 0.02 mm |
CR-2 Before | 214.78 | 214.77 | 214.84 | 214.82 | 214.79 | 214.79 | 214.77 | 214.84 | 0.07 mm |
CR-2 After | 213.49 | 213.48 | 213.49 | 213.50 | 213.50 | 213.49 | 213.48 | 213.50 | 0.02 mm |
CR-3 Before | 214.14 | 214.13 | 214.15 | 214.11 | 214.00 | 213.96 | 213.96 | 214.15 | 0.19 mm |
CR-3 After | 213.49 | 213.48 | 213.49 | 213.49 | 213.50 | 213.50 | 213.48 | 213.50 | 0.02 mm |
From the above, it can be observed that after grinding, the crankpin diameter of 213.50 mm was maintained with an ovality of only 0.02 mm. The surface finish after grinding was maintained at less than 0.15 mm Ra.
