Daihatsu 8-DK32 Crankshaft Repair in Oman

Before grinding and polishing of crankpin of Daihatsu DK32
  • RA Power Solutions was approached by a company based in Greece regarding a problem faced by them in the crankshaft of Daihatsu 8-DK32 auxiliary engine. The vessel was sailing near Oman. RA Power Solutions deputed technicians along with portable onsite crankshaft grinding equipment to Duqm Port, Oman. Since all the technicians of RA Power Solutions have seaman books, they were able to travel to Oman in a very short time along with the equipment.

Following are the details of the Daihatsu DK32 Crankshaft:

    S. No. Crankshaft Details
    1  Engine Make  Daihatsu
    2  Engine Model 8-DK32
3  Crankpin Diameter Standard  250 mm

The following steps were taken to repair the crankshaft of Daihatsu 8-DK32:

    i) After removal of bearing material from the crank pin diameter the dimensional inspection was conducted to check the taper & ovality. The ovality of more than 1.26 mm was observed.

ii) The deep scoring marks, line marks, and localized damage were also observed on the crank pin nos 3.

iii) The hardness of the crank pin was checked. In general, the hardness was within the limits except for a few scattered spots on which higher hardness was observed.

iv) Since the higher hardness was observed to be scattered and in a non-critical area of the crankpin. It was accepted.

    v) No cracks were observed in the magnaflux test.

vi) Deflection was checked and was observed within limits.

vii) The vessel was at the Duqm port, Oman for a very limited time, hence our technicians worked non-stop and successfully repaired it. The crank pin diameter was reduced from 250 mm to 247.00 mm. (3.0 mm undersize from the standard diameter).

viii) The vessel had undersize bearings available which were assembled, and the engine was put back into operation.
