  • The crankshaft of Naval STORK Werkspoor S.A Engine on board a vessel at the port of Miragoane in Haiti has been successfully repaired by RA Power Solutions Engineers.

    We were contacted by a Miami USA-based shipping company regarding the failure of the crankshaft of the main engine. The vessel was stranded at the port of Miragoane in Haiti.

    Inspection of Crankshaft and main observations of Naval STORK Werkspoor S.A Engine

    • On visual inspection it was noticed that two crankpins i.e. number 2 and number 3 bearings were badly damaged and the bearing material was struck on connecting rod side edges.
    • The dimensional inspection was undertaken of crankpin no. 2 and no. 3 and excessive ovality was observed. There was severe damage on crankpin no. 2 and crank pin no. 3.
    • All other crankpins had ovality and line marks.
    • In the case of crank pin no 2 and crank pin no 3 surface cracks were also observed, the hardness was checked and was observed on the higher side on some spots but nothing alarming.
    • RA Power technicians undertook grinding of crankpin no. 02 and crankpin no. 03 to the undersize of 2.0 mm. All other crankpins were polished to remove the bearing line marks and rough surface.
    • We also inspected all six connecting rods and observed connecting rod of number 2 and number 3 having excessive ovality on the minus side which is not desirable as it reduces the oil gap between the crankpin and bearing.
    • The connecting rods are repairable and as per the suggestion of RA Power Solutions, the connecting rods have been sent to a workshop in Miami USA for repair.
